Time for Accreditation at Donald Berman Maimonides
The accreditation process at DBM is just weeks away. The centre will be welcoming Accreditation Canada visitors Scott Hebert and Elaine MacAlister on October 1st through the 4th.
Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit, independent organization that provides healthcare organizations with an external peer review to assess the quality of their services based on standards of excellence.
During the last accreditation process in 2009, Maimonides received glowing results from Accreditation Canada. We were the first organization to meet all Required Organizational Practices (ROPs) and were called “the leader in raising the bar”. In our ongoing quest to improve excellence, we strive for even better results in 2012.

In recognition of this transformative gift, Maimonides Geriatric Centre will become the Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Centre. The funds will allow the Centre to continue to provide More than Care for the residents and to improve and innovate the physical space.
Donald Berman came from humble beginnings. Through great persistence and determination he grew an enterprise from a single souvenir stand at Expo 67 to a conglomerate of companies including amusement rides and games at La Ronde, a plush toy manufacturing facility in Old Montreal and a successful import/export business. Maimonides RECEIVES LAURA GILPIN SPIRIT OF KINDNESS AWARD
 |
Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Centre was presented with the 2010 Laura Gilpin Spirit of Kindness Award, recognizing its extraordinary work in caring for its caregivers. In conjunction with the 2010 Planetree Annual Conference held in October, in Denver, Colorado; the award was presented by Planetree President Susan B. Frampton at a special ceremony attended by Planetree members from across the globe.
Founded in 1978 by a San Francisco patient who endured a traumatic healthcare experience, Planetree is an internationally-recognized not-for-profit organization that partners with health care providers around the globe to advance patient-centered approaches to care. Planetree has been at the forefront of the effort to personalize, humanize, and demystify the healthcare system for more than 30 years. With its model of patient-centered care being implemented in a diverse range of hospitals, continuing care facilities, outpatient clinics, and consumer health libraries across North America, Brazil, The Netherlands and Japan, Planetree is demonstrating that patient-centered care is not only an empowering philosophy, but a viable, vital, and cost-effective model of care.
As a Planetree affiliate, Maimonides is committing to the Planetree philosophy and implementing this model of patient-centered care. Guided by the model's 10 core components, Maimonides is implementing initiatives and practices designed to enhance the resident experience while also supporting the professional and personal aspirations of their staff.
“The Laura Gilpin Spirit of Kindness Award is a testament to Maimonides’ commitment to our staff. Caring for the caregivers not only benefits the staff at Maimonides, but also positions them well to provide the best possible care to our residents” said Barbra Gold, Maimonides’ Executive Director.

FULL ACCREDITATION STATUS
GRANTED TO MAIMONIDES
In October 2009, a team of surveyors from Accreditation Canada met with
the Maimonides community partners, board members, staff, volunteers,
residents and family members in order to assess the standards of quality
and safety at our Centre.
Garnering high praise for the quality of care given to its residents,
Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Centre subsequently received incredible feedback
during the general debriefing session.
Surveyors Gayle Campbell and Steven Campbell
each said they would be proud to work at Maimonides, and had trouble
narrowing our achievements down to just a few – but they pointed
to the success of the Suite Dreams capital renovation campaign, our
research program, Art for Healing and Planetree as
examples of excellence at Maimonides.
Maimonides has been granted full accreditation
status by Accreditation Canada.
